Media Statement on Forestry Deferrals

Vancouver, BC – Michael Goehring, President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) made the following statement on the announced forest sector deferrals announced by the provincial government:

“Members of the Mining Association of BC (MABC) are watching the recent announcement on deferrals within the forest industry with considerable concern.

“Any policy decisions having the potential to disrupt the lives of thousands of workers and communities must be science and evidence-based with a full understanding of their consequences to all stakeholders.

“MABC has consistently expressed concerns with the predictability and timeliness of permitting and authorizations applying to British Columbia’s land base and to our operations. While we are supportive of the province’s recent initiative to improve regulatory efficiency, these efforts must be expedited to protect well-paid family supporting jobs in communities throughout the province and to prevent investment from leaving British Columbia.”
